Artist Statement:
“Baby Face” is from my series of paintings of modern day Femme Fatales. The title for this piece came from an early Barbara Stanwyck film,“Baby Face” 1933. This series came about from my love of old black and white movies and the sexy femme fatale featured in Film Noir. These women were always dressed to kill and able to tempt any man they targeted with their affections to get what they wanted. My work marries the beauty of black and white cinema with technicolor accents. The face and skin are rendered in charcoal with the natural color of the MDF board showing through. The hair becomes a palette of expressive color and pattern, adding to their fanciful quality. The most alluring parts of the face, the lips and eyes, are given special attention. Various accents of mystery are added to each piece that hint at their deadly mission in life.
