Sarah Bales Losey, Cotton Candy Sky, acrylic on stretched canvas, 36x36in., $2,300
This painting is inspired by those magical moments when you look up at the sky and see the clouds melt into soft, dreamy swirls. Like sweet cotton candy, these moments invite you to be present and savor the beauty around you.
Artist Statement
My work is rooted in a meditative, minimalist approach, using color and form to create visual planes of wonder and introspection. In my most recent portfolio, I work with acrylic on hand-stretched canvas, combining concentric bands of color with calculated tonal shifts to evoke depth, vibration, and luminosity. My palette is drawn from the ever-shifting hues of the sky during sunrise, sunset, and the ephemeral moments in between. Rather than depicting landscapes, I distill the essence of atmospheric light into structured, rhythmic compositions.
These Visual Meditations emerged as I began prioritizing my mental health, recognizing that caring for myself was essential to being fully present for my daughter. The repetitive act of applying pigment and refining freehand edges is both a meditative ritual and a practice of self-restoration. Once complete, I frame each painting by hand, maintaining a fully intentional, tactile connection to the work. The concentric forms in my paintings serve as visual manifestations of the boundaries I have set—not as constraints, but as necessary space for balance, clarity, and inner peace. Subtle tonal shifts create a quiet vibration, inviting the viewer to slow down, breathe, and engage in a moment of contemplation.
While my process is deeply personal, the work speaks to broader themes of emotional well-being, mindfulness, and the power of visual simplicity to evoke profound emotional resonance. Influenced by the spiritual abstraction of Hilma af Klint and the organic, atmospheric qualities of Georgia O’Keeffe, I explore the relationship between color, emotion, and form, using abstraction as a means of introspection and growth.
