Human Kintsugi
by Katherine Baronet, edited by Sharon McGregor
Outraged by mystery and trapped in a lie,
No longer contained by invisible embrace
She angrily slashed the glorious, crowned face.
And in that moment the room fell away.
Over and over she sobbed in despair
Wondering how the nightmare arrived.
An original fallen to a tearful repute
Lost in care that had gone misplaced.
Broken and tattered, her presence destroyed,
Confused in remorse while longing to act,
A soft infant voice called out to see
Sung like a whisper, praying that day.
Words flew from heaven to mend her torn heart,
Lotion and devotions to cover the cuts,
Fill those cracks with love, precisely your way.
Use precious gold it sang – a tender embrace.
Faster and faster her heart seemed to beat,
No longer a trace, just a former immaculate face.
Thrilling sensations suddenly returned
Ecstatic laughter over forgotten gloom.
Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with precious metals like gold, symbolizing the beauty of imperfection.
Rooted in a philosophy that embraces flaws and life’s fragility, Kintsugi teaches us to find strength and beauty in our scars, to heal, and to reframe adversity as a path toward resilience and peace.
Artist Statement
My artwork is an exploration of both nature and spirit. It emerges from a space beyond the mind – where the master creator takes over. I’m transported to a place where time, and thought all disappear, and I become one with the creation that comes through me and onto the surface in front of me. Making art is a spiritual expression that flows thoughts.
I am fascinated with seedpods, and plants that can heal. The extraordinary intelligence to regenerate life is held within them, the ability to duplicate another life, and the ability to heal is fascinating. Through size, monochrome color, and details, I exaggerate the seemingly unimportant to the remarkable. Each of my creations is a yearning to express life’s remarkable essence – the seed.
