Kat Warwick, Possibilities: Resting on a Nest of its Former Self, stone sculpture - pink Persian onyx, 13.5x24x15in., $3,200
The simple egg. It can represent many things including birth and rebirth. The egg series, was born in 2024 and allowed me the luxury of creating art without any plan, sketches, or maquettes. The first stone told me, "knock off my edges and let’s see what happens". With curiosity, I knocked off its edges. As I carved, an egg appeared. When I used a few of its shards to prop it up and look at it, it gave me it's name. Each beautifully unique egg that came after, had it's own story to tell and gave me it's name as I carved. And all of them refused to be mounted securely on a base. Instead, they wanted to be balanced on their own shards, a pillow, or in this case, on the members of the community, giving their future selves the opportunity to be displayed in a variety of ways.
The egg series is dear to me because I relinquished all control and truly let each stone guide my hand. The end result is that each egg has it's own personality and story to tell, is proud of its journey, and powerfully ready for the next set of life experiences.
Possibilities: Resting On A Nest Of Its Former Self offers a question for us to ponder. With an internal flame of passion it asks... Will I reinvent myself today? Will I change the world? Will an incubating idea come forward? Will a life struggle simply become a curious puzzle to be solved? Shall I shed what does not serve me? Shall I vanquish my fears and walk boldly into the possibilities that life offers?
Artist Statement
From a place of curiosity, I create stories in stone. Through this magical partnership with the natural world, my work provides opportunities of discovery for you. It is my belief that if mankind had not learned to partner with stone to create objects of usefulness, worship and beauty, we would not have developed into the society we now enjoy. It is this ancient human/stone partnership that captures my creative heart, allowing the stone itself to become my muse.
Being a native north Texan I hold a BFA from UNT, and continue my education through practice, experimentation and sculpture workshops. When not creating sculpture, I create learning opportunities for others by teaching at The Creative Arts Center of Dallas and being an event sculptor.
