Sue White, We Will Rock You, acrylic mixed media on canvas, 40x48x2 in.
INSPIRATION
I started this painting in a “Fearless Abstraction” workshop with artist, Jane Burton.
When I returned home, I pinned it to a wall and sat in front of it. What did I like? I liked the chromatic blacks, complex warm and cool grays, and the black splatters on the lower right, but there was a big corridor running through the middle of the painting between two rows of repeating white marks. I needed to shape it up and shake it up. I got out of my way and let it rip.
I was in the flow on this one. It is all about mark making, movement and energy. As I look at this piece, I see it as an affirmation of my growth as an artist and as a woman, and of the power of womanhood amidst the chaos to be tamed. I see the stylized ovals marching up the canvas as a symbol for women and their power; thus, the title, “We Will Rock You”.
This is womanhood. This is magnificence!
ARTIST STATEMENT
I started my painting journey late in life. I have always been a creative. When I retired from a creative, all consuming profession, I planned to venture into painting. I had no idea how all consuming it would become for me. I got off to a slow start having to spend time overcoming people pleasing and perfectionism. It took years for me to understand that I had to get out of my own way. I had to stop trying, stop thinking and let my body lead the way.
Why do I paint? I paint to unleash that wild child, who was allowed to do anything she could conjure. I paint to unleash the free spirit that was there before rules put restraints on me. I want my art to be a reflection of an artist who loves play, freedom and joyfulness and who wants to share her joy with the world.
