Julia Hughes, The Spot, acrylic on canvas, 16x20 in., canvas plus 3.5 in. gold frame.
INSPIRATION
My inspiration for this piece was a special moment my daughter and I shared at the Dallas Arboretum. When she was just barely walking, we found a somewhat "secret" or lesser known path that led to a beautiful patch of foxgloves. She turned and looked at me with the biggest smile and did the sign for "please". I'll never forget how beautiful that day and that moment were. Connection between mothers and daughters is magnificent and so unique. We are the memory makers and keepers.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork explores the relationship between color and design. I use acrylic paint exploring simple lines and shapes to resemble elements of nature.
My grandmother was a phenomenal force in my life, an outstanding matriarch, and leader in her community. She had a lovely way of making anyone feel welcome in her home. A large reason for that was her choice in artwork and how well it melded with her other design for her home. When she passed away I realized that my most valued of her possessions were her art. Each piece so timeless in style and with many memories attached.
Growing up in a family of strong women artists has made me aware of the value art can bring to the world. My intention is to create pieces that will inspire future generations of women for years to come. Through my work I celebrate the strength of women.
