Cindy Ingram, Pei, stained glass on cradle board, framed, 10x10 in. plus frame.
INSPIRATION
I wanted to created an elegant alien. As I was making her, I realized she slowly became a representation of a character in a book series I love, Pei from the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers particularly The Galaxy and the Ground Within.
It was in this book series that I realized my sexuality, so it holds a special place in my heart. Pei is a strong female character, a captain of a spaceship, and a rebel against society standards.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My mosaic is guided by intuition, curiosity, and joy. I use mostly stained glass, often focusing on value and color to build form and character. The process is meditative, and I let the materials lead as I go.
I’m drawn to quirky subjects like aliens, dinosaurs, and expressive creatures, because I want art to feel fun and be a representation of my neurodivergent personality. I spent a lifetime being too serious, trying to fit into a world that didn’t make sense to me. I thought I had to make serious art to be a real artist, but I have learned to listen to myself, my sparks of curiosity to create work that I love. If I find myself giggling while I work, I know I am successful.
For me, the creative process is the most important part. It’s a way to reconnect with myself, to listen, and to follow what feels true. Over time as the artworks pieces come together, so do I.
