Celia Hardick, The Delicate Arch, oil on canvas, 9x12 in.
INSPIRATION
This piece was inspired by my experience at Arches National Park and seeing the 52-foot-tall Delicate Arch in person. What stayed with me was the feeling of witnessing a part of the earth that has been shaping itself for thousands of years and still stands in the middle of the desert. There’s something almost unbelievable about it, the way the rock holds itself, and the fact that it exists whether we’re there to witness it or not.
I was especially drawn to the scale of the arch and the openness of the surrounding landscape. In painting it, I wanted to capture the feeling of being there, where everything feels both expansive and still at the same time.
For me, magnificence isn’t loud or performative. It’s found in something enduring, powerful, and real. Being in a place like this creates a shift in perspective, where you feel small, but also deeply connected to something much larger. That sense of scale, presence, and quiet power is what I aimed to express through composition, color, and use of space.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint landscapes to capture moments when a place feels so vast and powerful that it almost doesn’t seem real.
I’m drawn to places that shift my sense of perspective and remind me that I’m part of something much bigger than myself.
I focus on scale, light, and color to reflect that feeling. I’m interested in how space can feel expansive and immersive, and how a place can hold both intensity and stillness at the same time. Rather than just capturing what a landscape looks like, I aim to translate what it feels like to stand within it.
