Kathy Krismer - The Scent of Memory, 15×22 in. (21×29 in. framed), watercolor on watercolor paper.
When I painted this piece, I was thinking about how certain objects become symbols for entire chapters of our lives. The shape at the center is traced from a Chanel perfume bottle—an object that carries associations of beauty, elegance, confidence, and memory. But rather than painting the bottle itself, I wanted it to exist almost like a memory emerging from a field of emotion.
The red surrounding it represents passion, vitality, desire, and the intensity of lived experience. The bottle sits quietly at the center, grounded and still, while everything around it feels expansive and alive. As I worked, I found myself reflecting on the things we treasure—not because of their material value, but because of what they remind us about ourselves, where we've been, and who we've become.
This piece is about memory, identity, and the way a simple object can hold an entire story.
