YiFang Tsai, Oliver-A1236099, gouache, 8x10in., $250
My inspiration for this piece comes from my experiences volunteering at the Dallas Animal Shelter. I’ve noticed that large and older dogs often have a harder time getting adopted, unlike puppies, who are usually in high demand and find homes quickly. The good news is that this particular dog has now found a foster home, which is a positive step. Their story motivates me to continue doing more for these animals in every possible way, and creating this portrait is one way I hope to bring more attention to them and encourage others to adopt.
Artist Statement
As an artist, I have explored various themes and mediums, yet I struggled for years to find my true voice. It wasn’t until last year, when I discovered the Dallas Animal Shelter and began volunteering, that I had a profound realization. Witnessing the lives of shelter animals up close affected me deeply. I found myself thinking: beyond capturing good photos for their profiles and offering treats through the crate, what more could I do for these animals?
This led me to begin creating pet portraits, focusing on the dogs in the shelter, with the hope that my artwork would help them gain more attention and perhaps even find forever homes. By showcasing their unique personalities, I aim to give these animals a voice and share their stories. I choose vibrant gouache as my medium to bring out the essence of each pet, using color and texture to reflect their individuality and spirit.
