Paulina Altamirano, Where the Light Breathes, hand embroidery on cotton canvas with glass beads, 14x14 in.
INSPIRATION
"Where Light Breathes" is a celebration of the expressive power, beauty, and authenticity of being a woman. Through every stitch, I explore the silent magnificence that dwells within us—that light which softens, transforms, and expands beyond the visible.
The portrait—with eyes gently closed and hair in motion—embodies a state of surrender and presence. She does not seek to be observed; she simply exists in her truth. Her expression speaks of inner peace, resilience, and the freedom found in embracing one's own essence without restriction.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores cultural identity through contemporary embroidery, utilizing thread as both material and language. I reinterpret traditional symbols and portraiture to question how identity is constructed, perceived, and preserved over time.
Through vibrant colors and directional stitches, I move away from realism to create emotive portraits that reflect complexity, resilience, and transformation.
I am interested in how cultural narratives are embodied and transmitted across generations. My work seeks to honor these stories while reimagining them within a contemporary context—one in which tradition is not static, but rather living, evolving, and deeply personal.
