Jennifer Carswell, Kaitlan, acrylic on canvas, 8x8 in. (9x9 in.framed).
Inspiration
I’ve been so challenged by the silencing of women by this current administration (and really since before that) that I set out to create this series (there are 6 pieces total) to honor those women, and honor the strength and power we have.
These are very abstract pieces of the female form, where the power originates.
Artist Statement
I have been an artist for years, though my art never seemed to have a purpose. I was creating for the approval of others, in hopes of being seen as worthy and/or successful in their eyes.
I was constantly comparing myself to other artists… especially on social media. Which left me feeling defeated, not uplifted or inspired.
I needed to align myself with subjects and ideas that had meaning and depth for me, allowing me to truly create from within.
It wasn’t until recently that I feel I am moving in a direction that only I have paved.
