As we've begun piecing together the history of our building through old telephone directories, Yellow Pages, City of Dallas records, newspaper articles and personal memories, one theme keeps emerging:

4428 Main Street, Suite 200 has been bringing people together for more than 60 years.

1964: THE STORY BEGINS

Commercial real-estate records date the present building at 4428 Main Street to 1964. It describes approximately 4,400 square feet on the first floor and an additional 6,500 square feet upstairs.

The building was constructed using Acme Brick, we know this because some of the building’s bricks have the Acme stamp on them. When the building first opened, the second floor was a pool hall.

Help us solve the 1960s mystery

Do you know the name of the original pool hall?

We would especially love to identify:

• The original pool hall
• Its owner or operator
• The original owner or developer of 4428 Main Street
• The architect
• The general contractor
• The specific Acme Brick originally used
• Photographs of the exterior or interior during the 1960s

If you have an old photograph, advertisement, matchbook, business card, newspaper clipping or simply a memory, we'd love to hear from you.

2011: EL VAQUERO NIGHT CLUB (4430 Main)

APRIL 2013: EL JAGUAR NIGHT CLUB

By the early 2010s, the City of Dallas records give us something earlier directories could not, an exact suite number.

A City of Dallas Certificate of Occupancy identifies:
4428 Main Street, Suite 200
El Jaguar Night Club
Commercial Amusement (Inside)
4,464 square feet.

This is direct documentation that the upstairs Suite 200 (where Art on Main is today) was being used as a nightlife/entertainment venue.

The 4,464-square-foot figure is interesting because the second floor later was marketed as approximately 6,500 square feet.

That raises another question. Did El Jaguar occupy only part of the second floor? Was another part separated from the club? Or did the City of Dallas simply calculate the occupancy area differently? We don't yet know.

PGs remained associated with 4428 Main Street into the early 1990s.

After that, our timeline becomes much less complete.

1990s:
A MISSING CHAPTER

1960s - 1970s:
THE TIMES SQUARE
CUE CLUB

In July 1975, D Magazine published an article about Dallas bars and after-hours establishments that identifies, The Times Square Cue Club at 4430 Main at Carroll and described Times Square as an upstairs pool hall located over a café.

Players recalling Dallas pool culture in the 1960s and 1970s repeatedly mention Times Square as one of the city's serious pool rooms—a place where skilled local and traveling players could find a game.

Those recollections suggest that Times Square was part of a lively Dallas pool scene and had developed a reputation well beyond the immediate neighborhood.

1976: BANJO’S
APPEARS at 4428 Main

The earliest business name we have independently documented at the address in 1976 is Banjo's.

We don’t yet know what Banjo’s was - or whether it was operated upstairs or downstairs. but it doesn't tell us what Banjo's was.

Was Banjo’s the cafe beneath Times Square? We’re still trying to find that out.

If you remember Banjo's at 4428 Main Street, please contact us. Even a small detail could help us connect the dots.

JULY 2013: MI CANTINA

The 1983’s EARLY 199s: PG’s

Every building has a story.

At 4428 Main Street in East Dallas, that story stretches back more than six decades—and we're still discovering it.

Today, the second floor (Suite 200) is home to Art on Main, where artists work in their studios, exhibitions fill the galleries and people gather for openings, workshops, classes, talks and community events.

But long before Art on Main opened its doors, generations of Dallasites were already coming to 4428 Main.

1988-89:
GoForth Paul Co.

Goforth Paul Co. is also listed at 4428 Main.
The directory doesn't provide a suite number, and we haven't yet discovered what the company did.

If the name means anything to you, we'd love to hear from you.

By December 2003, 4428 Main Street had another documented nightlife identity, El Capri Nighclub.

El Capri is listed under nightclubs in the 2003 and 2005 Dallas Yellow Pages.

APRIL 2017: SILVERADO

2022: ART ON MAIN FINDS A HOME

Unlike the 1976 Banjo's listing, this one tells us what kind of establishment PG’s was.

It’s listed under Cocktail Lounges.

PG's continued to be associated with the address into the early 1990s, suggesting that it was a longstanding part of the building's nightlife history.

But it has left us with one of our favorite mysteries. What did PG stand for?
We don’t know.

Do you? Do you have a photo or story to share?
