Cate Irwin Johnson | Idol Worship

$400.00

Cate Irwin Johnson, Idol Worship, stained glass, acrylic on paper, 11x8 in.

INSPIRATION
This piece was inspired by the forms that the Virgin Mary takes in wearable tokens of medallions, and the Korean Pop idol photo cards carried around by young fans around the world. There is a parallel in the fandom and religion, and all of it relates back to the power and presence of women.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Cate Irwin Johnson’s work is inspired by obsession and materiality. She is interested in the way that community forms through visual signals, and how those objects become memorialized through acts of worship.

Using light, texture, and patterns, she explores her obsessions in ways that elevate trivial subjects of fandom. Historical habits and objects are paralleled with contemporary signals of interest to create dialogues between time, space and aesthetics.
