Common wisdom will tell you to only look forward, but sometimes it’s nice to reflect on things behind you.
While out in the field photographing a beautiful sunset in a pristine location, I turned around to take in the full impact of the heart-stopping moment. This photo was taken facing the opposite direction from the eye-catching sunset. It features an environmental effect called alpenglow that gives a painterly light to the scene.
While the show was happening behind me, it really reminded me to keep in mind that beauty in nature and life can be found looking forward, behind and all around. We are the product of our past and it made us who we are. Taking a deep breath in that moment gave me full appreciation where I had come from and where I was going.
Artist Statement
As a human these days, it’s so hard to stop, be present and notice the simple beauty that passes us by in our busy everyday lives. As a photographer, I strive to notice and capture these moments, even in the most surprising times and settings.
With a background in geography and biology, I have a deep appreciation for and am inspired by the diversity of flora and fauna in our world.
My photos cast a wide net ranging from pastel landscapes to abstractions found in nature. Due to the minimal aesthetic, my work has been described as serene, allowing space for the viewer to breathe and rest.
